Infinity Pool Construction: What to Know Before You Build

21 October 2026 · 2 min read

Negative edge swimming pool overlooking a river

Infinity pools, also known as vanishing-edge or negative-edge pools, create the illusion that the water extends to the horizon. They are the signature feature of many luxury homes and resorts, and they work best where the view is worth showing off.

How an infinity pool works

One or more pool walls are built slightly lower than the water level, so water spills over the edge into a hidden catch basin or trough. From there, it is pumped back through filtration and returned to the pool. The result is a continuous sheet of water that appears to merge with the landscape.

Key construction considerations

  • Site and levels: infinity edges suit sloping sites and elevated positions where the drop and the view can be used.
  • Structure: the vanishing edge requires precise levels and a carefully engineered wall and catch basin.
  • Waterproofing and finishes: the edge must be perfectly level and the catch basin watertight.
  • Circulation: pumps, a balance tank and well-designed plumbing keep water moving and the catch basin from overflowing.
  • Safety: the drop beyond the edge needs thoughtful barriers and signage.

Cost and maintenance

An infinity pool involves more complex construction than a standard pool, so it sits at the higher end of the budget. The extra plumbing also means more equipment to maintain. Our cost guide explains how design choices affect price, and our maintenance service keeps the system in top condition.
